Yesterday we received the results of the repeat echocardiogram. This second heart sonogram followed three days of medication given to close the ductus arteriosus. It is a blood vessel near the heart that allows blood to bypass a babies lungs while in the womb and is supposed to naturally close within the first few days after birth. If it does not close it is called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and gone untreated the babies lungs 'flood' or receive to much blood.
Two very kind cardiologist explained to us that both Dane and Betsy have PDA. They will require surgery that will be today or tomorrow. Please keep them and their surgeons especially in your prayers.
